Chapter 12

When I wake up the next morning, I can still feel Thoren between my legs and I groan as I twist under the sheets. Last night shouldn’t have happened but it was amazing.

My head throbs dully from the wine I had, and I get up and get into the shower. As the steam rises up around me, the scent of our sex rises again in the hot bathroom and another wave of warmth washes through me.

I’m so attracted to him, and I know it’s a bad idea, but I can’t stop myself. Especially out here, where nothing else matters and it feels like we’re secluded, removed from reality.

I know I can’t think that way. I have to think about the long-term, here. Everything I do has consequences, I learned that the hard way.

If I’m not careful, this will come back and bite me in the ass, too.

It’s just so hard to think of this as a bad thing when it feels so right. So good.

We meet as a company at the breakfast buffet and I mingle with my employees. The whole time, I’m aware of Thoren and where he is in the room. When I look up at him, his eyes are already on me, and we share a secret smile.

“How are you feeling?” Jessica asks, coming up to me.

“I feel good,” I say, unable to hide my smile. “Being out here really was a good call.”

“You look a lot more relaxed,” Jessica agrees.

That’s because of what Thoren did to me last night, but I won’t tell her that.

“It feels like nothing’s wrong right now,” I admit. “Being out here just makes it feel like all the problems have melted away. I know they’ll still be there when we get back, but for now…”

“It’s good that you get to rest,” Jessica says before I try to explain myself.

“I’m really glad we hired Thoren,” I say.

Jessica raises her eyebrows. “Is this the fresh air and secluded atmosphere talking?”

I laugh. “No, it’s a fact. I mean… he’s a pain in my ass and I don’t always like what he has to say, but he’s a specialist in his field, right?”

“Right,” Jessica says.

“So, then it makes sense to listen to what he has to say and let him work his magic.” I think of his mouth on me and the orgasm he gave me, and I shiver. Talk about magic.

“I know you probably don’t want to, but I need to tell you something about business,” Jessica says.

“Now?” I ask. “Let’s wait until we get back.”

Jessica shakes her head. “It won’t be long. I just want to talk about the data leak we had. I think it’s coming from the marketing department.”

I frown. “What makes you think that?”

“It’s just something I heard last night when the wine was free-flowing. In vino veritas, you know?”

In wine, the truth.

I don’t know how to respond. Her words wipe away my happiness and I look over the groups of people eating. Somewhere here, among the people we’re
